A DAY ON SAFARI…

EVERY DESTINATION HAS ITS OWN ROUTINE AND SELECTION OF ACTIVITIES, BUT THE SCHEDULE BELOW GIVES AN IDEA OF WHAT YOU CAN LOOK FORWARD TO.

Rise and shine! You will be woken up with a gentle wake up knock, a warm cup of coffee or tea, and a light breakfast just before sunrise. As you set out with your camera and layered clothing, the sun will rise to reveal the breathtaking landscape. The crisp morning air will awaken your senses, encouraging you take in and consider each sight, smell, and sound.

Each destination has its own dynamic population of wildlife, and each excursion a new and unique adventure! One day you may spend time with a breeding herd of elephants, and the next you may follow the tracks of a leopard to find it resting in a tree. Your highly trained and licensed guide will use nature’s clues to shape your drive according to the wildlife you wish to see. While exploring, stop to enjoy an invigorating coffee or tea and soak in Africa’s undeniable beauty.

As the sun’s heat becomes stronger, animals become less active, providing a perfect opportunity to take a break back at camp. Enjoy the beauty of the camp’s serene surroundings, take a swim at the pool, and keep a look out for wildlife passing by. As the afternoon begins to cool off, you will meet for a quick snack to discuss the afternoon’s agenda with your guide.

At the end of your afternoon adventure, sip a refreshing drink and watch the sunset over the African landscape before heading back to camp. When the sun has set, the bush TV (campfire) is lit, and story time begins. Share in the day’s magic with new and old friends before sitting down to a lantern-lit dinner. At night’s end, you will be escorted back to your room where you will fall asleep to the sounds of the African bush.

TRAVEL ADVICE
HEALTH + SAFETY

It is important to consult your doctor before your safari to discuss health precautions specific to your itinerary. As safari destinations in Africa are located in malaria-risk areas, and in some countries a yellow fever vaccination is compulsory. It is best to consult a professional to gain up-to-date medical advice, as health regulations are regularly updated.

PASSPORTS + VISAS

We will provide individualized information depending upon the length of your safari and specific requirements and visa fees for the countries included in your itinerary. Typically, travelers to Africa must have a passport that is valid six months beyond your departure date that also contains a sufficient amount of blank visa pages.

BANKS + FOREIGN EXCHANGE

Each country accepts a unique list of foreign currencies. We will provide you with information specific to your itinerary, so that you are well prepared throughout your journey. In most countries, you can securely withdraw the local currency from an ATM, or exchange foreign currency as soon as you arrive at the airport.

TRAVEL INSURANCE + HEALTH INSURANCE

Should there be an incident while you are traveling, it is very important to have the necessary travel insurance information at hand. This will permit prompt action and assistance during an event, whether it is lost baggage, a missed flight, or a medical emergency.

SAFARI TYPES
BEACH

Africa’s eastern coastline is home to some of the most pristine, private, and picturesque beach destinations in the world. Beach getaways line the coast and meet the warm, clear waters of the Indian Ocean. Whether you are an avid beach goer, a snorkeler or scuba diver looking to explore, or a honeymoon couple looking for romance, sand, and sun, Africa’s east coast has something for everyone. Mozambique is home to beautiful golden, sandy beaches and remote islands. If your safari takes you further north to East Africa, Tanzania offers amazing beach destinations along the Indian Ocean.

FAMILY

There’s nothing greater than sharing in the excitement and joy that a safari brings with family. Lodges are eager to reveal the magic and wonder of Africa’s wild areas to families. As we visit our recommended properties, we know which camps encourage young explorers and provide engaging, personalized activities. We will help you carefully craft a personalized safari experience to create lasting memories with your loved ones.

GROUP

An African safari is a perfect way to spend quality time with friends or family. Share a vehicle with friends as you come across a breeding herd of elephants, witnessing their intimate and thoughtful interactions together. Throughout your trip, you and your group will collect treasured memories.

KILIMANJARO

Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa at 19,340 feet. Set in Northern Tanzania, this dormant volcano offers one of the most expansive, unmatched views of East Africa’s wild plains. Treks up Kilimanjaro are led, supported, and run by a Tanzanian company that has been a leader in Kilimanjaro’s climbing community for decades. We will help you learn what to pack, how to physically prepare, and which routes and timelines are best suited for you.

MIGRATION

The Great Migration is one of the most exciting, awe-inspiring Seven Wonders of the World. Nowhere is there a movement of animals as immense as the wildebeest migration. Each year, over two million animals migrate across the grasslands of East Africa -- from the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania to the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya – in a pattern that is affected by rainfall and food supply. There is a combination of permanent lodges and mobile-tented camps available to cater to everyone’s traveling preferences. Idyllic lodges and camps are located in prime locations along age-old migration paths, and mobile camps move with the migration to provide up-close access to the migratory herds.

PRIMATE

Imagine following in the footsteps of Dian Fossey, where she forged the path to protect the endangered mountain gorilla. Led by expert trackers, you will trek through the misty, mountainous rainforest in search of wild and free primates, and spend time reveling in this humbling experience. Mountain Gorilla trekking is offered in Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda or in Bwindi National Park in Uganda. Chimpanzee treks are offered on Rubondo Island and in the Mahale Mountains in Tanzania where chimpanzees live wild and free. It is best to book primate safaris more in advance than other safaris, as securing permits depends on availability.

PRIVATELY GUIDED

For individuals who would like to have a safari expert accompany them throughout their entire trip, a privately guided safari is a great way to experience Africa. Private Guides have extensive knowledge of the flora, fauna, culture, and history of the areas you visit and can enrich your safari experience with personal stories, knowledge, and insight. While you will always have a local guide at each camp along your journey, your Private Guide will remain with you throughout to help guarantee a seamless experience from start to finish.

ROMANTIC

Africa is a perfect place to celebrate a romantic occasion like a honeymoon, anniversary, or special birthday. Create unforgettable memories in some of the wildest places on earth. Experience Africa’s amazing wildlife, an intimate dinner under the Milky Way, and a morning cup of coffee on your own private veranda with your partner. If you are worried about embarking on a faraway journey after a wedding celebration, combining an African safari with a beach vacation provides a great balance of down time and adventure. Your safari will include the perfect amount of rest and relaxation suited for you.

SELF-DRIVE

A self-drive safari is a great way to explore Africa’s wild areas, and is usually best fit for adventurous travelers. This type of safari can be tailored to fit any budget. South Africa is a country fit for first time self-drive safari goers, and Namibia and Botswana are great choices for return travelers. Equipped with travel arrangements, a detailed itinerary, and navigational maps, you will explore the wilds of Africa at your own pace.

SINGLE

We began our treks in Africa as independent intrepid travelers, and we know the exhilaration and fulfillment that comes from embarking on your own journey. We will take time to learn your travel desires and help you create a safari itinerary perfect for you. While you may be traveling on your own, you will never be without Safari True’s support and the support of our carefully chosen partners.

SPECIALTY (Birding, Photographic, Anthropological, Yoga)

Specialty safaris can be designed around your specific interests and passions, such as photography, birding, or anthropology. Your safari will be tailor-made to give you the freedom to explore and indulge in your individual curiosities. You can also opt to have a specialist guide accompany you throughout your trip. Our on-the-ground experience in Africa has given us insight into what locations, guides, and activities are ideal for pursuing your special interests.

WALKING

Led by a highly trained and licensed guide, you will embark on a walking adventure through the wilds of the African bush. Sights, sounds, and smells will become more apparent as you develop an acute awareness of your surroundings. Accommodation is typically in a walk-in, en-suite canvas tent. Zambia boasts of some of Africa’s best walking safaris led by some of the top guides in the industry. A walking safari can be combined with a typical safari or a beach getaway, depending upon the amount of adventure and rest that suits you best.

WHEN TO GO

Selecting the time of the year that best fits you depends on where you want to go and what you would like to see. Each season places different demands on nature, and the intricate web of life shifts throughout the year. Typically, during the winter season water is scarce and wildlife congregates around permanent water supplies. The dry landscape increases visibility, as foliage and vegetation remain thin. The lush summer season brings magnificent colors and new life. As food and water become more plentiful, antelopes give birth in numbers, and migrating bird species arrive. Both spring and autumn offer the best of both worlds as the subtle changes in the environment become apparent and wildlife and plants reveal their fascinating adaptations.

Africa experiences high and low seasons, corresponding to weather patterns and holiday travel. The high season occurs outside of the rainy season, when weather conditions are favorable and consistent. This time of year also offers the most advantageous conditions for wildlife viewing. While weather patterns can be more variable during low season, traveling during this time can provide a more private, less expensive safari experience, as there is typically a lower volume of visitors.

THE LOGISTICAL DETAILS WILL BE THOROUGHLY TAKEN CARE OF SO THAT YOU CAN RELAX, LET YOUR GUARD DOWN, AND RECHARGE.

We will recommend specific routes that cater to your travel style. Your safari itinerary will include all of the necessary transfers to carry you safely through your African adventure.

LODGING TYPES

Below is a general list of the types of accommodations found throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Each type is offered at a price range that depends upon available amenities, location, and the level of service.

LODGE

Safari lodges are permanent, sophisticated accommodations set in natural and wild areas. Comforts and luxuries found in bedroom suites range from carefully selected furnishings, fully stocked mini bars, and private plunge pools. Most offer spa and gym facilities, pools, and wine cellars that boast a collection of South Africa’s finest wine.

BUSH CAMP

Bush Camps are built in a natural, semi-permanent fashion to leave a minimal footprint on their surrounding environment. Each bush camp has an en suite bathroom and certain amenities, depending upon the level of luxury. They are typically smaller with a limited number of rooms, and they offer an intimate and remote safari experience.

TENTED CAMP

Tented camps consist of large, tented units with a common lounge area. Their natural and discrete style fosters a connection with nature and unobtrusive wildlife viewing. The canvas tents are extremely comfortable, with en-suite bathrooms and amenities. The tents are fully furnished with the comforts of home.

HOTEL

Large cities offer a variety of accommodations to fit anyone’s budget and traveling preferences. Their exceptional personal service, amenities, and hospitality match those of commercial hotels in cities throughout the United States and Europe.

BOUTIQUE HOTEL

Smaller, boutique hotels provide services, amenities, and design in unique settings. They provide a familiar and relaxing experience and more personalized service.
